Doctoral School Competitions 2023-24

The Doctoral School is pleased to announced its fourÌýannual competitions running this spring. Entrants can participate in as many of the competitions as they want; we hope that everyone will find something that appeals to them.Ìý

The prize pool remains unchanged for each competition:

  • First prize: £400Ìý
  • £100 for runners up
    – the number of runner up prizes will be decided based on the quality and numberÌýof entries.

We are also pleased to announce that thisÌýyear ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Student Funding Office will be offering two additional prizes of 1 x £400 and 1 x £100 forÌýentries from current recipientsÌýof the following ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº scholarships:Ìý¹û¶³Ó°Ôº's Research Excellence Scholarship (RES), Research Opportunity Scholarships (ROS), Graduate Research Scholarship (GRS), Overseas Research Scholarship (ORS) or Cross Disciplinary Scholarship (GXD or RXD). Entries to any of four competitions have a chance to win these prizes.

All competitions haveÌýa single prize-giving ceremony. This will take place atÌýthe Researcher Showcase DayÌýon Wednesday 5 June 2024.Ìý

Research Images as Art / Art Images as Research Competition

An annual competition open to all current ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº postgraduate researchers and staff, across disciplines. Entrants are invited to submit images associated with their research which have aesthetic appeal. The competition has been organised sinceÌý2001 andÌýhas always been veryÌýpopular.

Research Poster Competition

This has been a long standing annual competition but we recently added cross-disciplinary categories to compete in. This year, we also want to make it clear that posters should not be re-used conference posters, but should be adjusted or created for a wider audience, i.e. an academic lay audience.

Blog/Vlog &ÌýPodcast Competition

This competition aims toÌýrecognise new forms of media that researchers have started using, especially to express their research ideas to the general public. Blog submissions can be research based or about something more personal or funny like a research ‘failure’.

Data Visualisation Competition

The competition is organised to showcase sets of data in a creative way so that viewers can easily understand and absorb the data which are visually pleasing to the eye. This is in response to the increasing use of data visualisation techniques to illuminate research findings.
