After nearly three years of hiatus due to the Covid-19 global pandemic, the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Spices and Medicine annualÌýsymposiumÌýreturned in 2023. Taking place both in person and on Zoom, the symposium coveredÌýa wide range of topics related to natural products, their role in drug development, the challenges from a pharmaceutical analytical perspective, a new look at the use of medicinal plants by apes and, last but not least, the role of herbal medicine in today's societies.ÌýAs usual, the proceedings wereÌýimmediately followed by the annual Frank Fish Memorial Lecture given this year by Prof. Judith Rollinger (seeÌýbelow for further details). The 2023ÌýSymposium was organised by Francesca Scotti,ÌýBanaz Jalil, and Michael Heinrich, with special thanks to Fiona Marquet, ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº School of Pharmacy.

ÌýThe 2022-2023 Frank Fish Memorial Lecture

ABSTRACT: Tremendous advances in natural product technologies and big data analysis offer new possibilities to handle and utilize nature’s complexity to disclose hidden treasures and to assess the safety and quality of herbal remedies. In this memorial lecture she will present strategies to trace potentially cardiotoxic hERG channel blockers and to identify multipotent anti-infectives from natural sources.

BIO: Judith M. Rollinger is one of the most distinguished scholars in the field. Since 2019 she has been senator of the University of Vienna. She isÌýProfessor of Pharmacognosy / Pharmaceutical Biology, andÌýHead of Phytochemistry & Biodiscovery at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences / Division of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Life Science.
