This page contains鈥痑 list of terms and definitions commonly used in open access and in 果冻影院鈥檚 work to support it.

  • Article processing charge (APC)聽鈥 a fee levied by the publisher to cover publishing costs through the gold open access听谤辞耻迟别.
  • Author accepted manuscript聽鈥 the version of a research output that has been accepted for publication聽following peer-review (if applicable)聽but prior to the publisher鈥檚 formatting, copyediting and typesetting聽being applied. Can also be known as the聽postprint聽(although this term can be ambiguous).
  • Author submitted manuscript聽鈥 the version of a research output that has not yet undergone peer-review or been accepted for publication.听REF聽and funder requirements stipulate that the聽author accepted manuscript聽or later must聽be made open access.听Can also be known as the preprint聽(although this term can be ambiguous).
  • Bronze open access 鈥撀燼 less聽widely-used term聽than聽gold听辞谤听green open access, this refers to a publisher making聽an output openly available (鈥渇ree-to-read") but without a聽Creative Commons licence聽that聽guarantees this in聽perpetuity听补苍诲听permits聽reuse.听Such content cannot be made available in聽果冻影院 Discovery聽without permission from the publisher, either on an ad hoc basis or through a standard聽green open access听辫辞濒颈肠测.
  • 鈥 the national research funders, European and international organisations and charitable foundations that endorse Plan S.
  • Creative Commons (CC) licence聽鈥 a series of copyright licences which allow authors to licence their work for free reuse, with fewer restrictions than all rights reserved.听Publishers will apply a CC licence聽(or a similar licence with the same effect)聽as part of the聽gold open access听谤辞耻迟别.听More information is available on 果冻影院's聽copyright听补苍诲听research data management听飞别产辫补驳别蝉.
  • CRediT - a taxonomy describing 14 roles that represent the parts typically played by contributors in producing a scholarly output.
  • Diamond/platinum open access聽鈥 as聽gold open access, except that no聽APC聽is levied: the research output is free to both publish and read.
  • Embargo聽鈥 a聽requirement聽for a delay on open access聽often imposed by the publisher through the聽green open access route.听A typical embargo period will last between six months and two years.听The Open Access Team applies embargo periods to outputs in聽果冻影院 Discovery聽where required.
  • Final published version聽鈥撀爐he version of a research output as published, containing the publisher鈥檚 formatting, copyediting and typesetting.听Most publishers do not allow this version to be used in the聽green open access聽route, instead requiring the聽author accepted manuscript.听Also known as the version of record.
  • Gold open access聽鈥撀爐he process of making research outputs freely available and reusable on the publisher鈥檚 website under the terms of a聽Creative Commons licence, usually in exchange for an聽article processing charge. See 果冻影院's open access funding webpages.
  • Green open access 鈥撀爐he process of making research outputs freely available through an institutional repository (果冻影院 Discovery), often with restrictions聽requiring the聽author accepted manuscript聽and an聽embargo聽period, at no cost to the author.听The author鈥檚 process of doing this聽known as self-archiving.   • Hybrid journal聽鈥 a journal which publishes a mixture of subscription-access and聽gold open access聽articles.听This arrangement can lead to institutions paying the publisher twice 鈥 once for subscription access to the journal, and again through the聽APC聽for each聽gold open access听补谤迟颈肠濒别.
  • Institutional repository聽鈥 an online collection of an institution鈥檚 research outputs made openly available through the聽green open access听谤辞耻迟别.听果冻影院鈥檚 institutional repository is聽果冻影院 Discovery.
  • 聽鈥 果冻影院鈥檚 research portal, allowing users to view 果冻影院 researchers and their activities.听Publications information is imported from聽RPS.
  • Metadata 鈥撀燿ata that describes other data in a structured way.听In聽IRIS,听RPS听补苍诲听果冻影院 Discovery, this takes the聽 form of bibliographic information about research outputs.
  • Open peer review 鈥撀爐he practice of making the peer-review openly available in addition to the final research output.
  • Open science/scholarship聽鈥 a movement to make academic research transparent, collaborative, publicly available and聽reusable.听The 8 pillars of Open Science are FAIR Data, Research Integrity, Next Generation Metrics, Future of Scholarly Communication, Citizen Science, Education and Skills, Rewards and Initiatives, and EOSC.
  • ORCID 鈥撀燼 persistent, unique digital identifier for researchers that can be used to manage publications and other professional information.
  • Peer review 鈥撀爀valuation of a research output by聽academics with relevant subject expertise (鈥減eers鈥) to聽determine聽if it is suitable for publication.
  • 聽鈥 a current聽worldwide initiative by cOAlition S聽to accelerate open access, particularly encouraging immediate availability without聽embargo聽periods and聽journals becoming聽fully open access, instead of聽hybrid.听罢谤补苍蝉蹿辞谤尘补迟颈惫别听补驳谤别别尘别苍迟蝉 and transformative journals are聽features of Plan S.
  • Predatory publisher 鈥撀燼 publisher that exploits the gold open access聽model,听accepting most or all submitted research outputs for publication without adequate聽peer review,听thus maximising the income generated from聽APCs.听The聽聽guide can help聽authors聽to identify predatory publishers.
  • Preprint 鈥撀爋ften used interchangeably with聽author聽submitted manuscript, but some sources may use the term more聽generally to refer to any draft version of a research output聽prior to publication.听Some repositories, such as , are known as preprint servers because they contain versions of papers prior to submission or acceptance.
  • Proofs聽鈥 draft versions of a research output after acceptance听补苍诲听prior to publication of the聽final published version, but which do contain the publisher鈥檚 formatting, copyediting and typesetting.听Most publishers do not allow this version to be used in the聽green open access聽route, instead聽permitting聽the聽author accepted manuscript.
  • Research Excellence Framework聽(REF)聽鈥 a periodic UK-wide national assessment of research output quality by institution.听The next exercise is currently taking place and features open access requirements.
  • Research Publications Service (RPS) 鈥撀燼n online platform providing a hub for 果冻影院 researchers to manage a central record of their research outputs.听Researchers should upload their publications in RPS for them to be made openly available in聽果冻影院 Discovery.
  • Subject repository聽鈥 an online collection of freely accessible research outputs covering a particular subject or discipline, not limited to a particular institution.听An example is (medical sciences).
  • 罢谤补苍蝉蹿辞谤尘补迟颈惫别听补驳谤别别尘别苍迟聽鈥撀燼n agreement between a publisher聽and institutions聽encouraging the transition of journals from聽hybrid聽to fully open access.
  • Transformative journal 鈥 a聽journal that meets , set out as part of Plan S,听showing its commitment聽to becoming聽fully open access.
  • 聽鈥撀牴秤霸衡檚聽open access聽颈苍蝉迟颈迟耻迟颈辞苍补濒听谤别辫辞蝉颈迟辞谤测, showcasing and providing access to the full texts of 果冻影院 research publications.听The publications are managed in聽RPS.
