Strikes On for Coming Week - no real 鈥渙ffer鈥 on table

18 March 2023

This is a quick update to let members know the result of the HEC meeting on Friday 17th March.

We thank you for your action so far, and for telling your reps unambiguously to relay to the Higher Education Committee (HEC) your rejection of the misleading and confusing e-poll.

This is a quick update to let members know the result of the HEC meeting on Friday 17th March. The HEC is the body democratically charged with making key decisions on our strike action. They have carefully considered the 鈥渙ffer鈥 and decided that this is not sufficient to put to the membership.

An unauthorised e-poll on a 鈥渄ouble-barrelled鈥, and therefore incoherent, question was circulated by union officials without the consent of the HEC. This produced much confusion and provoked upset and anger among members. A national Branch Delegates Meeting (BDM) on Thursday (yesterday) saw a rejection of that incoherent and confusing question, which conflated consultation on the 4 Fights and on USS with stopping strike action (when there is no new pay offer on the table, nor any meaningful offers on the other three elements of the Four Fights beyond an offer that was already rejected in 2020). There was then a rerun of the vote at the BDM by officials with questions that remained ambiguous. The result was an incoherent vote: yes to consultation (although unclear on what), but a bigger yes to continuing strike action.

As a consequence of this, and taking into account that 1. post-92 universities are in no way served by the offer on USS, 2. an agreement to consult employers on zero hour contracts does not address the brunt of casualisation in the sector, and 3. there is nothing for our members on pay, the HEC voted not聽to put the 鈥渙ffer鈥 to members and to continue with the planned strike action.

For the avoidance of doubt, therefore: 果冻影院 UCU, along with all other UCU branches in this dispute, will be on strike on Monday 20, Tues 21, and Weds 22 March next week.

Please see our聽strike days, picketing, and teachout details.

UCU is not alone in rejecting the idea that these offers have put enough on the table to be taken to members. The HE section of Unison have also rejected this 鈥渙ffer鈥, and are re-balloting for strike action.聽

Please get some rest over the weekend (remember we are still working to contract) and see you next week, when the final days of this tranche of strike action will take place, along with a聽, starting at Tavistock Square at noon.聽

If you have not voted in the reballot, please do so asap, as we need the pressure to stay on the employers, for them to actually make an offer in this dispute that is worth putting to the membership. We need a convincing ballot win for the employers to take our demands seriously.聽

Thanks to your actions we have forced employers to negotiate, but without concrete agreed outcomes we must press them further.
