Temporary or permanent loss of the sense of smell can take a serious toll on a person’s health and even cause mental health disorders.

In fact, early olfactory dysfunction is a biomarker for detecting diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. The negative effects of smell dysfunctions have also been experienced by a larger global population due to the impact of COVID-19.

The aim of this European Research Council (ERC)-funded proof-of-concept project was to develop efficient, adaptive and affordable smell delivery technology for smell training. This project was awarded to the University spin-out company OWidgets Ltd, which was co-founded by Professor Marianna Obrist.

The project was successful in both participant enrolment and collection of reliable data, which in turn enabled the creation of digital data sets based on smell performance.

Smell Health’s findings laid the foundations for our team’s new project Smell Care.
