Role of a Research supervisor at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº

Research student supervision is a core academic responsibility, requiring expertise in both teaching and research.Ìý

The relationship between aÌýsupervisor and a research studentÌýisÌýa unique oneÌýwith a range of responsibilities,Ìýincluding:Ìý

  • ProvidingÌýstudentsÌýwith a thorough grounding in all aspects of research within the context of an academicÌýdisciplineÌý
  • CreatingÌýa learning experience that is intellectually challenging and personally fulfillingÌý
  • ProvidingÌýtimely andÌýconstructive feedbackÌýonÌýresearch design, methodologyÌýand writingÌý
  • Offering encouragement andÌýongoingÌýsupportÌýfor both academic and non-academic challenges as appropriateÌý
  • Supporting students to disseminate their researchÌý
  • PreparingÌýstudentsÌýfor a range ofÌýcareersÌý
  • Monitoring students’ progress and ensuringÌýthatÌýtheyÌýare able toÌýcomplete theirÌýdoctorateÌýin a timely manner.Ìý

At ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº all students have at least two supervisors, typically a Principal and Subsidiary,Ìýbut there are many models of co-supervision. Increasingly, students may be part of aÌýThesisÌýCommittee, which can involveÌýthree or more supervisors taking on different roles and responsibilities.Ìý

Research supervision sits within a wide infrastructure of support for research studentsÌýprovided byÌýteams, includingÌýthe ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Doctoral School, ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Student Support and Wellbeing,Ìý¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Organisational Development, ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Careers and others.Ìý
