Personal tutoring training

Personal tutoring is a core academic responsibility. To enable the highest quality personal tutoring, there is training available for all staff who carry out or support the role.

There are four main听personal tutoring听training options available听from the 果冻影院 Arena Centre.听

Resources and pre-workshop tasks are hosted on the听果冻影院 Personal Tutoring online course听eXtend听site.听

Online course for personal tutors听

This online course is鈥痳ecommended听for听all members of staff听in听personal tutoring roles听at 果冻影院, including new members of academic staff with experience of personal tutoring at other institutions.鈥€�

Encouraged to look through before attending the workshops.听

Experienced 果冻影院 personal tutors are also encouraged to work through the course鈥痑s a refresher and central resource containing information, guidance and links to relevant policies and materials.鈥�

The course will take approximately 3-4 hours to complete, depending on how much time you spend exploring the resources. You can work at your own pace, return to the course at any time, and access the materials in any order. 鈥�

On completion of the course, you will be able to download a certificate of completion.鈥�

You can also use the听course as a one-stop-resource for support and guidance on a range of personal tutoring topics and issues.听

Introduction to Personal tutoring

This workshop, offered by 果冻影院 Arena Centre, is aimed at academic staff who are new to a personal tutoring role at 果冻影院. It focuses on the main purposes of personal tutoring and how to provide effective support. 听

In this session we will:听

review 果冻影院鈥檚 approach to personal tutoring and your role within it;听
consider how this can be adapted in face-to-face, remote and blended environments;听
discuss some challenging scenarios;听
talk about where and how to refer students experiencing difficulties and signpost further sources of support for staff.听

We recommend that personal tutors enrol and complete sections 1-3 of the online course before attending the 鈥業ntroduction to Personal Tutoring鈥� workshop. Additional workshop resources are hosted on the 果冻影院 Personal Tutoring eXtend site and will be made available at least one week ahead of the workshop.听

This workshop is comparable to the听鈥業ntroduction鈥� and 鈥楻emote鈥� personal tutoring workshops from previous years.听听

Developing as a 果冻影院 Personal Tutor

This workshop, offered by 果冻影院 Arena Centre, was developed through a 果冻影院 Changemakers staff-student partnership. It is aimed at personal tutors who have completed the online course and 鈥榠ntroduction鈥� workshop (including previous versions of the intro or remote personal tutoring workshops). This workshop focusses on exploring what students鈥� value in their personal tutors and on considering a series of 鈥榓uthentic鈥� scenarios.听

In this workshop we will:

Explore ways to work with your tutees;听
Be aware of support for students and staff;听
Consider what students see as being important in a Personal Tutor; 听
Reflect on real situations gathered by students and presented in an 鈥渁uthentic鈥� way; 听
Discuss how to approach these personal tutoring scenarios in small groups.

We suggest you familiarise yourself with sections 4 to 7 of the 果冻影院 Personal Tutoring online course before attending the workshop. Additional workshop resources are hosted on the 果冻影院 Personal Tutoring eXtend site and will be made available at least one week ahead of the workshop.听

Approaches to supporting students for Professional & Technical Services staff

This workshop, offered by 果冻影院 Arena Centre, is aimed at professional and technical services staff who are new to student support, or personal tutoring, roles at 果冻影院. It focuses on the role of professional/technical services colleagues within personal tutoring and provide support for working with students in this setting. 听

In this session we will:听

explore approaches in the remote & blended environments;听
discuss some challenging scenarios;听
review further sources of support for students & staff;听
review 果冻影院鈥檚 approach to personal tutoring and your role within it; 听
reflect on expectations, boundaries & referrals;听
consider how to have conversations with students.

We suggest you familiarise yourself with sections 3, 5, and 7 of the 果冻影院 Personal Tutoring online course before attending the workshop. Additional workshop resources are hosted on the 果冻影院 Personal Tutoring eXtend site and will be made available at least one week ahead of the workshop.听

You are also invited to join the. We听are using听this site听to听share new resources and training opportunities (internal听and external to 果冻影院) throughout the year, and to听establish a community of practice for personal tutors where colleagues who are new and experienced in the role can share examples of practice/activities for engaging with and supporting their tutees.
