¹û¶³Ó°Ôº has been certified for having an effective environmental management system that ensures limited negative environmental impact and sets examples for best practice during its annual ISO audit.
History and Outcome of the Audits
Ìý
¹û¶³Ó°Ôºâ€™sÌýEnvironmentalÌýÌýSustainabilityÌýManagement SystemÌý(ESMS)ÌýÌýand ¹û¶³Ó°Ôºâ€™s Energy Management SystemÌý(EnMS)Ìýhelp ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº ensure that we are limiting our environmental impactsÌýrangingÌýfrom sustainable materials use,Ìýto energy efficiency and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and consumption.ÌýThe systems provide a structured approach to deliverÌýourÌýSustainabilityÌýStrategyÌýcommitments, includingÌýbecoming a net zero carbon institution by 2030.Ìý¹û¶³Ó°Ôº is assessed every year against theÌýassessment criteria and needs to show continuous improvement in its environmental sustainability and energy performance to maintain certifications.Ìý
¹û¶³Ó°Ôºâ€™s Environmental Management System has been certified to since 2017, whilst ¹û¶³Ó°Ôºâ€™s Energy Management System was created and certified to in 2019. This year, ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº was successfully re-certificated toÌýthe international standard for environmental and energy management calledÌýISO 140001 Environmental Management & ISO 50001 Energy Management,Ìýfor another 3 years, following aÌý7-dayÌýrecertification audit.
¹û¶³Ó°Ôºâ€™s Best Practice AreasÌý
This year ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº showed exceptionalÌýperformanceÌýand impact management in threeÌýareas that the auditor identified as "Best Practice". These where:ÌýÌý
- BuildingÌýEnergyÌýManagementÌýÌý
¹û¶³Ó°Ôº uses anÌýinnovativeÌýBuilding Energy Management SystemÌý(BEMS) software,Ìýused by ¹û¶³Ó°Ôºâ€™s BEMS contractor Kendra Energy,Ìýwhich proactively identifiesÌýopportunitiesÌýtoÌýmakeÌýenergy savingsÌýand reduceÌýenergy costs.Ìý22 Gordon StreetÌýis a greatÌýexample of thisÌýapproach,Ìýwith the software pilot identifying potential energy savings even in a relatively new building.Ìý
- Building SwitchÌýOffÌý
¹û¶³Ó°Ôº used the time during lockdownÌýtoÌýconductÌýin-depthÌýmonitoringÌýof ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº buildings,ÌýswitchingÌýoffÌýplantsÌýinÌýbuildingsÌýthatÌýwereÌýnot being occupied and reducingÌýthe activeÌýhoursÌýin others. ThisÌýsignificantlyÌýreduced ¹û¶³Ó°Ôºâ€™sÌýenergy demand and costs.ÌýÌý
- CateringÌý
¹û¶³Ó°Ôºâ€™s newÌýcateringÌýcontract withÌýÌýfeatures:Ìý senior management supportÌýforÌýthe integration of sustainability inÌýthe tender process,Ìýa robust sustainabilityÌýmonitoring process andÌýtheÌýappointment of a Sustainability Manager for the contract.ÌýThisÌýdemonstratesÌýhowÌýthe contract contributes to deliveringÌý¹û¶³Ó°Ôºâ€™sÌýsustainability strategy. - Soft Landings
¹û¶³Ó°Ôº's soft landings process ensures that the project team working on a building considers how thisÌýbuildingÌýwill be used once handed over to its occupants.ÌýThereÌýareÌý6 key stepsÌýto this.ÌýThis process ensures that sustainabilityÌýobjectivesÌýare part of theÌýinitialÌýdesignÌýand the sustainabilityÌýperformanceÌýis tested after occupancy,Ìýe.g.ÌýtestingÌýenergy efficiency targets of building against actual performanceÌýin operation.Ìý
What next?Ìý
OurÌýambition is to have a fullyÌýintegratedÌýenvironmental sustainability managementÌýsystemÌý(ESMS) and energy management system (EnMS)Ìýfor nextÌýyear'sÌýaudit. ThisÌýwillÌýprovideÌýa more efficient and cohesive way ofÌýmanagingÌýourÌýenvironmental andÌýenergyÌýimpacts.ÌýÌý
