In the early 1970s a 鈥榩oem in prose鈥� called Moskva鈥揚etushki spread throughout metropolitan samizdat. The book describes a train journey by an alcoholic Venichka Erofeev 鈥� the hero鈥檚 name replicates that of his author 鈥� from Moscow to the small town of Petushki. Consumption of alcohol on the way takes Rabelaisian proportions. Venichka鈥檚 journey plays out on two levels: physical, from a morning hangover to delirium tremens, and metaphysical, from a dubious resurrection to a horrifying vision of mystical crucifixion.

Erofeev鈥檚 grotesque masterpiece, with its breathtaking mastery of the Russian language, sharp satire and brilliant humour ending in nightmarish tragedy, left its readers shaken, perplexed and fascinated. When in 1989 the 鈥榩oem鈥� was finally published in Russia, its author immediately became a recognized classic, the most loved and admired writer of his time and generation.

The monograph 鈥�袙械薪械写懈泻褌 袝褉芯褎械械胁 袦芯褋泻胁邪-袩械褌褍褕泻懈 懈谢懈 The rest is silence鈥� (Venedikt Erofeev 鈥淢oscow鈥揚etushki鈥� or 鈥淭he rest is silence鈥�) by Svetlana Shnitman鈥揗cMillin contained the first detailed intertextual analysis, research of the genre and style of Erofeev鈥檚 extraordinary oeuvre. This book together with a volume of articles 鈥�袙械薪械写懈泻褌 袝褉芯褎械械胁 懈 芯 袙械薪械写懈泻褌械 袝褉芯褎械械胁械禄 (Venedikt Erofeev and about Venedikt Erofeev), including two publications of Svetlana Shnitman鈥揗cMillin and the article of Zinovy Zinik was recently produced by NLO, Moscow.
