About Us

The Centre for Space Exochemistry Data grew out of the Physics and Astronomy department at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº in November 2018, with key contributors from other departments in MAPS (Computer Science and MSSL). Now in its third year, the centre is based in the Harwell Science Campus and aims to bridge the gap between astrophysics, space engineering, computer science, machine learning and industry.

Ariel timeline
In just 20 years, research into the formation of planets, stars and galaxies throughout the universe has reached a level of maturity where major investments through space-missions, national and international grants and industry are now being realised.

The Centre for Space Exochemistry Data grewÌýout of the Exoplanet and Extragalactic Astrophysics Groups at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº in November 2018. The Centre is based withinÌýtheÌý, a strategic location that facilitates intersections with public organisations, includingÌý,Ìý,ÌýÌýand leading privateÌýcompanies from the spaceÌýsectorÌýand start-ups. CSEDÌýaims to bridge the gap between astrophysics, space engineering, computer science, machine learning and industry.

CSED is an accelerator of the connection between the academicÌýenvironment and other sectors that will attract privateÌýinvestments. It serves as an incubator forÌýdisruptive ideas to create spin-offs and develop partnerships in the industrial domain. To date, two successful start-ups have been created for the commercial exploitation of ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº exoplanet-related activities.ÌýCSED members are also part of the Centre of Planetary Sciences at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº/Birkbeck.

TheÌýinspirational nature of exoplanet and extragalactic science attracts the best students and young minds from all overÌýthe world. The intersectorial environment of CSED prepares a newÌýgeneration of highly-qualified leaders and managers in scientific, technicalÌýand business areas.

CSED fosters educational initiativesÌýconnected to exoplanet science and STEM, including plans for a national and international roll-out of the successfulÌýÌýandÌýÌýprogrammesÌýcurrently run in the LondonÌýarea.
