Research Methods: HIV, Sexual Health and Infectious Diseases

Overview

This intensive four-day short course will help you develop your research skills.Ìý

It's been designed to meet the specific needs of busy healthcare workers who want to know more about research.

After completing the course you'll be better able to conduct, appraise and interpret research.

You'll be able to use research in your clinical practice and in other settings, and be able to disseminate your learning to others.

Many of the teaching examples used on the course are from infectious diseases and sexual health, but the principles can be applied to any discipline.

This course is run by the Centre for Clinical Research in Infection and Sexual Health based in the Institute for Global Health at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº.

Course content

This course will cover:

  • epidemiology
  • statistics
  • mixed methods research
  • systematic reviews
  • surveys
  • interviews and focus groups
  • ethnography
  • creative methods
  • the use of big data
  • public and patient involvement (PPI)
  • ethics, data protection, and practical considerations
  • digital inequalities and working with marginalised groups

Who this course is for

This course is aimed at academics, postgraduate students, and professionals working in relevant organisations e.g. healthcare services and NGOs.

Course structure and teaching

The course will run over four days (Monday to Thursday).

This course will be a mix of live lectures with live Q&As, group work and a live panel discussion. There will also be breakout rooms to facilitate group learning.

There is no course assessment.

Cost and concessions

The standard price for this course is £650.Ìý

There is a reduced rate of £550. This is only available to:

  • individuals from middle/low income countries (World Bank classification)
  • full-time students

Course team

Dr Manik Kohli

Dr Manik Kohli

Manik is a Sexual Health and HIV Doctor and an NIHR Doctoral Research Fellow at the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Institute for Global Health.  He was previously a NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow (2020-2023) and Clinical Research Fellow (2023-2024) in the Centre for Clinical Research in Infection and Sexual Health at IGH. His PhD research is focused on the use of antibiotic prophylaxis for bacterial STIs ('doxyPEP') and the impact on antimicrobial resistance and the human microbiome.

Dr Erica Pool

Dr Erica Pool

Erica is an NIHR Doctoral Research Fellow at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº, alongside this she works clinically as an HIV/sexual health doctor at Mortimer Market Centre, London. She completed a Masters in Public Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. She has held clinical academic posts in York, Brighton, and London, and has experience working on a range of HIV, PrEP, and STI clinical trials. The aim of her PhD is to investigate barriers, facilitators and preferences for HIV prevention in people experiencing homelessness.
