About us

CPS members play key, and sometimes leading, roles in planetary space missions such as Cassini Huygens, ExoMars Rosalind Franklin, JUICE (Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer), ARIEL (Atmospheric Remote-sensing Exoplanet Large-survey), PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) and Comet Interceptor. The Centre continues to be involved in the European Union-funded Europlanet project that brings together Europe's major planetary science centres.

The CPS is a centre of excellence for research in planetary sciences, based on a collaboration between three ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº departments and Birkbeck:

The CPS is primarily a "virtual" research centre, and comprises researchers within the following groups at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº and Birkbeck:

(Exo)Planetary SystemsÌýGroup, Dept of Physics & Astronomy, ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº

Some researchers from the following groups in the Department of Earth Sciences at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº:ÌýCrystallography and Mineral Physics; Deep Volatiles; The London Geochemistry and Isotope Centre; Micropaleontology; Precambrian Research; Rock and Ice Physics Laboratory.

The Europlanet Society

The Europlanet Society promotes the advancement of European planetary science and related fields for the benefit of the community and is open to individual and organisational members. Anyone with an active interest in planetary science (whether academic or industrial, professional or amateur) is welcome to join.

Many of our CPS colleagues are already members of the Europlanet Society and Prof Nick Achilleos is the current Chair of the Society's Ireland and UK Hub.

Europlanet RI 2024

The Europlanet 2024 Research Infrastructure (RI)Ìýprovides free access to the world’s largest collection of planetary simulation and analysis facilities, data services and tools, a ground-based observational network and programme of community support activities.

The Centre, via it's ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº departments of Physics and Astronomy and Space and Climate Physics,Ìýcontinues to be involvedÌýin the European Union-funded Europlanet project that brings together Europe's major planetary science centres.Ìý
