Phenomenal Women: Portraits of UK Black Female Professors

10 March 2020

Professor Ijeoma Uchegbu is one of the professors in a new exhibition called Phenomenal Women: Portraits of UK Black Female Professors. This exhibition features portraits of forty professors across a range of disciplines, including the arts and sciences.

The photographs were taken by Bill Knight and they represent the work of Dr Nicola Rollock, who has been researching the careers of Black, female professors in higher education.

Speaking about the exhibition, Professor Ijeoma Uchegbu said, 鈥淲hile I am delighted to be included in this exhibition and extremely honoured; the fact remains that less than 0.2% of UK professors are both Black and female.聽

This is unacceptable, especially when one considers that over 7% of UK domiciled students are Black and that at least half of these are women. 聽One looks forward to the day when Black female professors become the norm and are not celebrated as being exceptional. 聽We still have a lot of work to do in the sector.鈥

The portraits will be on display until the end of March at London's City Hall.
