Overview
The language sciences are undergoing a quantitative revolution, with an ever-growing array of statistical tools for analyzing language data. While the revolution is happening at full speed, many researchers find it difficult to apply the new tools to their own data. This four-day workshop is targeted at researchers within the language sciences who want to learn more about statistics and R. The workshop can be considered as a "full course" in statistics, introducing participants to basic descriptive statistics with R, linear modeling and mixed models. The data analysis techniques learned in this workshop have wide applicability in various fields of the language sciences, including corpus and experimental research. The first sessions will be very basic to get everyone on board, followed by more advanced sessions.听The workshop will combine theory with hands-on sessions with a particular focus on multimodal/visual language. The ultimate goal of the workshop is to get researchers up to speed with analyzing their own data. No mathematics background is required. No programming background is required. Participants have to bring their own laptops with R and RStudio installed (instructions will be sent before the workshop).
