University Clinic

As part of the Office for Students-funded Student Mental Health Partnerships project, ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº and the University of Sheffield have set up University Clinics: services which improve access to high quality, evidence-based mental health treatment for students and staff.

University Clinics areÌýmental healthÌýservicesÌýwhich are attached toÌýuniversityÌýclinical psychology departments. WithinÌýtheseÌýclinics, evidence-based treatment is provided by clinical academic staff and traineeÌýpractitionersÌýunder close supervision, and newÌýcutting edgeÌýtreatments are developed andÌýtested.ÌýA mainstay of clinical psychology training and practice in other parts of the world, especiallyÌýtheÌýUS and Australia, University Clinics are rare in the UK becauseÌýof theÌýNHS’sÌýprovision ofÌýmental health services. However,Ìýwhere such clinics do exist in the UK,ÌýtheyÌýareÌýrecognisedÌýasÌýprovidingÌýextremelyÌýhigh-quality care.ÌýÌý

There areÌýa number ofÌýadvantages to the University Clinic model.ÌýEvidence-based treatment for certainÌýissues may not be availableÌýthroughÌýuniversity or standard NHS services, butÌýspecialistÌýUniversity Clinics can provideÌýa broader range of treatments (e.g.ÌýforÌýpeople on the autism spectrum).ÌýA number ofÌýstudents will fall between the gaps of NHS primary and secondary care, andÌýUniversityÌýClinics can help bridge that gap (e.g.Ìýfor students with eating disorders,ÌýorÌýemotionalÌýdysregulation). ForÌýtrainees, University Clinics provide aÌýhigh qualityÌýtraining environment, and for researchers they provide the opportunity to develop new treatments.ÌýÌý

¹û¶³Ó°Ôº has the largest Clinical Psychology training course in the UK, trains Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners for London and CBT practitioners forÌýlarge areas of England.ÌýOur University Clinic is NHS-based, withÌýspecialist satellite clinicsÌýlinked withÌýestablished NHS clinics.ÌýThe University of Sheffield University Clinic is based in the Counselling ServiceÌýand so has a different model. However, both clinics areÌýaÌýcollaboration between practitioners and the academic clinical psychology department, and we are learning from each other as we develop these models.Ìý¹û¶³Ó°Ôº and theÌýUniveristyÌýof Sheffield are now working with other universities, to exploreÌýthe expansion of thisÌýmodel.Ìý
