University Clinic

As part of the Office for Students-funded Student Mental Health Partnerships project, 果冻影院 and the University of Sheffield have set up University Clinics: services which improve access to high quality, evidence-based mental health treatment for students and staff.

University Clinics are听mental health听services听which are attached to听university听clinical psychology departments. Within听these听clinics, evidence-based treatment is provided by clinical academic staff and trainee听practitioners听under close supervision, and new听cutting edge听treatments are developed and听tested.听A mainstay of clinical psychology training and practice in other parts of the world, especially听the听US and Australia, University Clinics are rare in the UK because听of the听NHS鈥檚听provision of听mental health services. However,听where such clinics do exist in the UK,听they听are听recognised听as听providing听extremely听high-quality care.听听

There are听a number of听advantages to the University Clinic model.听Evidence-based treatment for certain听issues may not be available听through听university or standard NHS services, but听specialist听University Clinics can provide听a broader range of treatments (e.g.听for听people on the autism spectrum).听A number of听students will fall between the gaps of NHS primary and secondary care, and听University听Clinics can help bridge that gap (e.g.听for students with eating disorders,听or听emotional听dysregulation). For听trainees, University Clinics provide a听high quality听training environment, and for researchers they provide the opportunity to develop new treatments.听听

果冻影院 has the largest Clinical Psychology training course in the UK, trains Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners for London and CBT practitioners for听large areas of England.听Our University Clinic is NHS-based, with听specialist satellite clinics听linked with听established NHS clinics.听The University of Sheffield University Clinic is based in the Counselling Service听and so has a different model. However, both clinics are听a听collaboration between practitioners and the academic clinical psychology department, and we are learning from each other as we develop these models.听果冻影院 and the听Univeristy听of Sheffield are now working with other universities, to explore听the expansion of this听model.听
