Support for students and staff affected by events in Morocco and Libya

13 September 2023

We know that events in both Morocco and Libya are incredibly distressing, and that some of you may be impacted or may be worried about family or friends in the areas. If you are affected, please do reach out for support to any of the services listed.

We will do everything we can to support those affected and are in the process of reaching out directly to members of our community from Morocco and Libya, or that have been studying, researching or working in the regions and who may be affected.ÌýÌý

Support available for studentsÌý

Students can contact our Support Team for Students affected by War, Conflict and Disaster, a collaboration between Student Support and Wellbeing (SSW), the Department of Psychology and Language Sciences (PALS), and the University Clinic. The team provides emotional and practical support to students affected by events in their home countries, such as an earthquake, by offering sessions of Psychological First Aid (PFA).

You can access the team's support by contacting the Study Abroad and International Support team - internationalsupport@ucl.ac.ukÌýÌý

ÌýAll students also have access to ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº's 24/7 Student Support Line for support with their mental health and wellbeing.Ìý

We know that a student affected may find it difficult to focus on their studies at this time. Anyone struggling with academic work should first talk to their tutor, who will be able to offer support and advice. Departments can also provide Extenuating Circumstances or Academic Adjustments to support any student who experiences sudden, unexpected difficulties that may affect their performance at assessment.ÌýÌý

If any students face financial difficulty as a result of the earthquake, we encourage them to speak with one of our Student Funding Advisers.ÌýStudents who are in unexpected financial need with their living costs can also apply to theÌýFinancial Assistance Fund.Ìý

Support for staffÌýÌý

¹û¶³Ó°Ôº staff and doctoral researchers can access confidential, 24/7 mental health support by phone, WhatsApp or Live Chat with our Employee Assistance Programme: Staff Support Service. ÌýÌý

We are continuing to monitor the situation and are working to contact staff in the area directly to offer support and ensure their safety.Ìý
