A range of exciting ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº events to mark Black History Month 2021 kicks off at the end of September and will run throughout October and November:Ìý

  • 28 September – [VIRTUAL]: Register for the Sarah Parker Remond Centre event, I fought the Law and I won, a Black Judge speaks, which will see Judge Peter Herbert OBE, founder of the Society of Black Lawyers speaking on race, law, and his recent legal action against the judiciary. Ìý

  • 1 October –Ìý[VIRTUAL AND IN PERSON]: JoinÌýDr Victoria Showunmi, Associate Professor at the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Institute of Education, forÌýQuestions of Race in Learning.
  • 6 October – [VIRTUAL]: The Institute of the Americas will be holding the event Whiteness in Latin America, which brings together three leading scholars on race studies to discuss the role of whiteness in Latin American cultures.Ìý
  • 14 October – [VIRTUAL]:ÌýJoin the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Centre for Artificial Intelligence as they celebrate Black voices in Artificial Intelligence.Ìý
  • 14 °¿³¦³Ù´Ç²ú±ð°ùÌý– [IN PERSON]: Register now for the Institute of Advanced Studies's screening ofÌýThe Struggle for Stonebridge. The film screening will be followed by a talk by Leonard Johnson, founding member of the Harlesden People’s Community Council.
  • 19 October – [VIRTUAL]: Join upcoming event What would I tell my younger self?Ìýto hear insights from a range of panel members at various stages in their career.
  • 19 °¿³¦³Ù´Ç²ú±ð°ùÌý– [VIRTUAL]: Book nowÌýfor a focusing on careers, challenges and solutions for Black Earth scientists.
  • 19 October – [VIRTUAL]: for a talk with Caroline Bressey onÌýher work on Black historical geographies in Victorian Britain and the changing context of Black History Month.
  • 20 October – [VIRTUAL]: Register for a seminar withÌýLuke de Noronha, who will be discussing the findings from his book Deporting Black Britons: Portraits of Deportation to Jamaica.Ìý
  • 26 October [VIRTUAL]: Come along to a workshop on resilience for Black History Month. The session will be centred aroundÌýgrowth in difficult times, anti-racism and allyship.
  • 26 October – [VIRTUAL]:Ìý, including ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº's Provost, Dr Michael Spence, to discussÌýcreating equity and best practice in higher education.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý
  • 28 °¿³¦³Ù´Ç²ú±ð°ùÌý– [IN PERSON]: Book forÌýThe Aesthetics of Revolution: Broadcasts from Accra, an upcoming lecture by Jesse Weaver ShipleyÌý– John D. Willard Professor of African and African American Studies and Oratory atÌýDartmouth College.

  • 3 November – [VIRTUAL]: Sign up to the Sarah Parker Remond Centre event British Black Power, which will feature Leila Hassan-Howe – Black British civil rights activist, leader, writer, history maker and co-founder of the 1970s 'Race Today Collective' – telling her story.Ìý
  • 4 November – [VIRTUAL]: Join Leila Hassan-Howe for a personal, illustrated journey through the life of Darcus Howe, a key figure in many major movements – from the Black Panthers to the Mangrove 9, Bangladeshi housing, the Black Peoples Day of Action, and more.Ìý
  • 4 November – [IN PERSON]:Ìýfor readings from German-Nigerian author Ijoma Mangold's memoir, The German Crocodile, newly translated into English.Ìý
  • 8 November – [VIRTUAL]: BookingÌýisÌýnow open forÌýSister Style: The Politics of Appearance for Black Women Political Elites, a free event hosted by the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Institute of the Americas.
  • 9 November – [VIRTUAL]: This talk will see Federica Morelli discuss her recent book, Free People of Colour in the Spanish Atlantic: Race and Citizenship, 1780–1850.Ìý
  • 10 November –Ìý[VIRTUAL]:ÌýJoin staff and students from ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº andÌýImperial College for a Black History Month Wikipedia edit-a-thon – they'll be creatingÌýand adding to the Wikipedia entries ofÌýat least 50 Black engineers and scientists.Ìý
  • 10 November – [VIRTUAL]: The Institute of the Americas Caribbean Seminar Series is delighted to bring you this expert panel discussion onÌýBarbados’s transition to Republic status.
  • 22 NovemberÌý– [IN PERSON]: Join Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum and leading ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº academics for a discussion on the issue of race and racism: why it persists, how we address it through education and how we can talk about it. ÌýÌý
  • 22 November – [VIRTUAL]: Book your place at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Laws'ÌýRace and Empire event onÌýlegal theory within, through and across national borders.
  • 23 November – [VIRTUAL]: Join Yesenia Barragan as sheÌýdiscusses her new book, published this year by Cambridge University Press:ÌýFreedom’s Captives: Slavery and Gradual Emancipation on the Colombian Black Pacific.
  • 25 November – [VIRTUAL]: Book now forÌýInflections of Anti-Racism in Latin America, an event that is part of the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Institute of the Americas series 'Race and Racism in the Americas'.
