Two new 果冻影院 Pro-Vice-Provosts, for London and for Artificial Intelligence, have been appointed to strengthen the delivery of the institutional strategy, 果冻影院 2034.

Professor Alan Thompson, Dean of Brain Sciences, will serve as Pro-Vice-Provost (London), and Professor Geraint Rees, Dean of Life Sciences, will serve as Pro-Vice-Provost (Artificial Intelligence).

As Pro Vice-Provost (London), Professor Thompson will lead and coordinate 果冻影院鈥檚 activities to consolidate and advance its position as London鈥檚 global university 鈥� in, of and for London.

His new role will see him engaging with policymakers, local government, creative and cultural organisations, industry, schools, colleges and HEIs, and other partners and supporters of 果冻影院 across the capital, including its 50,000 alumni based in London, in order to maximise the benefit to London of 果冻影院鈥檚 research and translation, education, entrepreneurship and public engagement.听

Professor Thompson says: 鈥淭his is a great opportunity to raise the profile of 果冻影院 in London and to underline how London benefits from 果冻影院 and, in turn, how 果冻影院 benefits from being at the very heart of London. I am delighted to be taking on this role and look forward to engaging with everyone working in this space in 果冻影院 and beyond to achieve these objectives.鈥�

Current projects illustrating 果冻影院鈥檚 commitment to London include:

鈥⑻�听 听The development of 果冻影院 East 鈥� working in partnership with the GLA, London Legacy Development Corporation, the cultural and heritage sector, other HE institutions and the local community to create an innovative education and cultural hub on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park
鈥⑻�听 听果冻影院 Centre for Access to Justice 鈥� an integrated health and legal service providing pro bono legal advice to vulnerable communities in East London, tackling the mental and physical ill-health that can result from lack of access to legal advice
鈥⑻�听 听Camden Clean Air Partnership 鈥� led by 果冻影院 and bringing together residents, businesses, schools and other organisations to pioneer radical new ways to improve Camden鈥檚 air quality, and helping to develop the Camden Clean Air Action Plan
鈥⑻�听 听The London Project to Cure Blindness - for the past 10 years, been developing cell-based treatments to cure blindness associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The project aims to bring stem cell therapy for retinal diseases, to the clinic as rapidly as possible

果冻影院鈥檚 London strategy is led by the Office of the Vice-Provost (Advancement), headed by Lori Houlihan, who will work closely with Professor Thompson to set the strategy

As the Pro-Vice-Provost (Artificial Intelligence) 鈥� reporting to Professor David Price, Vice-Provost (Research) 鈥� Professor Rees will be 果冻影院鈥檚 strategic lead for artificial intelligence (AI), ensuring that the university鈥檚 AI activity is greater than the sum of its parts, and engaging relevant researchers with industry, policymakers, partners and supporters in mutually beneficial relationships.听

Professor Rees said: 鈥淎s founding chair of the 果冻影院 AI Steering Group, I have led the creation of a coherent inclusive narrative, 鈥楢I for People and Planet鈥�, that identifies the distinctive global contribution that 果冻影院 can make for public benefit. We have begun to inspire and empower our AI leadership across an incredibly broad range of disciplines. This approach must also align with our other emerging strategies 鈥� for example, in research data, open science and London 鈥� and doing so will bring 果冻影院鈥檚 distinctive approach to cross-disciplinarity and impact to the fore. I will bring 果冻影院鈥檚 commitment to inclusion to this work, helping bring diversity to a sector that has a poor track record in gender and BME.听

鈥湽�冻影院 should seek to deliver AI impact for public benefit, so a key aspect of my role will be outward-facing and ambassadorial. In service of colleagues across 果冻影院 and working with 果冻影院 Innovation & Enterprise, I will establish and maintain relationships with key global technology partners, domain-specific partners (e.g. in education) and with the Government, NHS and other public bodies.鈥�
