Professor Ekins will spearhead the new institute's research and teaching programmes focusing on the sustainable use of natural resources.

He said: "The mission of the new institute is to generate knowledge that will promote the globally sustainable use of natural resources, broadly defined. Directing it is an enormous privilege and challenge, and I am of course very grateful to BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities for the initial grant which has created the institute. I am confident that the institute will contribute important insights into on-going debates about the green economy, and, more widely, how nine billion can live decent lives without over-stressing the natural systems which must support them."

The ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Institute for Sustainable Resources was created in 2011 to promote cross-disciplinary, problem-orientated research into the sustainable use of the Earth's resources.

The ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº ISR is supported by initial funding from its Founding Sponsor, BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities, under an agreement between ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº and BHP Billiton. The agreement also funds the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº International Energy Policy Institute based at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº's School of Energy and Resources in Adelaide, Australia. Ìý

BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities has provided the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº ISR with US$5 million over a five year period to fund academic research, fellowships and scholarships, as well as the appointment of a new Chair in Sustainable Global Resources.
