Admissions 2011 underway

19 August 2011

With the announcement of A-level results this week, university entrance is at the top of the news agenda.

Indeed, these months of the year are the busiest for ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº's undergraduate and postgraduate admissions staff, ensuring applicants are ready to enrol in September and that overseas applicants are able to obtain a student visa.Ìý

The last two weeks are a particularly intensive period for undergraduate admissions, with staff currently processing the A-level results of applicants for the 2011/2012 undergraduate intake in September.

As a leading research university with many high-quality applicants per place, ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº has filled all of its undergraduate places again this year, meaning that there have been no vacancies for Clearing or Adjustment applicants.

We have only been able to take a few offer holders who narrowly missed their grades. Undergraduate admissions staff have been working hard since the weekend to process the examination results for everyone holding an offer at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº, ensuring that an appropriate final decision is made on their application.

The dedicated Confirmation phone line, staffed by Outreach and Admissions, received approximately 1000 calls on the day A-level results were released.Ìý We also received a large volume of calls directly to faculty offices.Ìý

Every year, managing undergraduate admissions intake targets involves striking a difficult balance between ensuring that all available places are filled, and that ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº does not find itself in the position of too many qualified students for each place, for which the university is fined. For the year 2011/2012, indications are that we should come in comfortably within our HEFCE quota for Home and EU students and meet our Overseas target.

Bella Malins, Head of Outreach and Admissions, commented:

"All admissions staff, both undergraduate and postgraduate, have worked very hard this year to ensure that ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº meets its recruitment targets.Ìý I would like to thank all staff involved in admissions at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº for their continued hard work."
