On 14 December 2010,Ìý¹û¶³Ó°Ôº's newest scholarship recipients attended the annual scholarship awards reception to celebrate their achievement with fellow students, sponsors and academics.

¹û¶³Ó°Ôº scholarships recognise exceptional academic achievement and, as well as ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº itself, many organisations and individual benefactors invest in scholarship schemes for both undergraduates and graduate students every year.

Professor Michael Worton, Vice-Provost (Academic & International) and Chair of the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Scholarships Board described the event as "one of the highlights of ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº's calendar".

In this audio featuring five current scholarship recipients, we hear why scholarships are so vital for today's students, and the lifeline they provide for theirÌýpersonal and professional future.

  • Peng Zhang: ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Overseas Reseach Scholarship
  • Andrei Iovu: Joint ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº/OSI (Open Society Institute) Chevening Scholarship
  • Natalie Ohana-Eavry: ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Graduate Research Scholarship and ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Overseas Research Scholarship
  • Guido van Meersbergen: Graduate Research Scholarship
  • Reetuparna Sarkar: ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Graduate Research Scholarship and ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Overseas Research Scholarship

There were 134 scholarship recipients and their guests in attendance at the event, along with ambassadors and High Commissioners from some of the 45 countries represented by the scholars and representatives from some of the funding organisations - including Santander, the Africa Educational Trust and the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, and senior academic and administrative ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº staff.

¹û¶³Ó°Ôº context

At ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº a wide range of scholarships are available to students, awarded primarily on the basis of excellence in academic achievement. Scholarships at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº are also supported by many different sources, which apart from ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº itself include: the British government; foreign governments; the UK Research Council; industry, trusts and foundations; and the generosity of ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº's alumni and friends.
