Funding for open-access publishing

20 June 2006

¹û¶³Ó°Ôº has funds available to assist researchers holding a Wellcome Trust award to comply with its new requirement regarding open-access publishing.

The Wellcome Trust has introduced a new policy which requires electronic copies of any research paper that has been accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal - and is supported in whole or in part by Wellcome Trust funding - to be deposited into PubMed Central. This requirement applies to all grants awarded after 1 October 2005, and from 1 October 2006 to all grants regardless of award date.

The Wellcome Trust has provided ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº with additional funds to cover costs incurred with this new requirement. ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº has entered into a contract with BioMed Central which will enable ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº scientists to deposit their papers with them (at no cost to the author), an arrangement that is in compliance with the Wellcome Trust's rules, since the data will automatically be deposited with PubMed Central. This does not preclude publication with an alternative open-access journal as long as the Wellcome Trust policy is adhered to. Researchers are requested to check any such alternative arrangements with the Wellcome Trust.

As the total funds are limited, researchers should inform Dr Mary Phillips, Director of Research Planning (¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Biomedicine), that they plan to deposit their publication with BioMed Central or with any alternative open-access journal where there is a charge. Dr Phillips will then be able to confirm that any costs incurred will be met by ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº.
