¹û¶³Ó°Ôº

¹û¶³Ó°Ôº (¹û¶³Ó°Ôº) will today award its first ever Provost Prize to law student Vladislav Savov as part of its ongoing commitment to widening participation.

The prize, worth £2000, is awarded annually to a student entering ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº from City and Islington College who is exceptionally academically able, who has shown outstanding improvement during his or her time at the sixth form college and has overcome disadvantage to achieve entry to ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº. It will be awarded at a ceremony to mark the opening of the new home of City and Islington College at the Angel, to be held on Monday 26th January at 9.30am.

¹û¶³Ó°Ôº and City and Islington College are linked in a Partnership of Excellence, an innovative initiative formed in consultation with the DfES to raise the achievements and aspirations of the students at the sixth form college.

Vladislav Savov, the award's first recipient, came to the UK from Bulgaria in 1997. He joined City and Islington College in June 2003 and gained grade A passes in A-level english literature, geography and government and politics. He is now studying at law at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº as well as volunteering as a student mentor at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº and his former college.

Professor Worton, Vice-Provost and Fielden Professor of French Language and Literature at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº, says: "Our partnership with City and Islington College contributes significantly to our aim of widening participation in higher education. It also offers an opportunity for ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº students to gain valuable mentoring and training skills. We are delighted to be awarding this prize to Vladislav, in recognition of his achievements in obtaining a place at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº. We wish him every success in the future."

The event will be attended by Janice Shiner, Director General of the lifelong learning directorate at the DfES and Professor Worton.
