An expert on the use of multimedia and information technology in public transport planning, Dr Shiffer will look at ways in which new computer technologies can be used to improve communication to Tube passengers through the use of information kiosks, the Internet and multimedia representational aids.

Dr Shiffer will use examples ranging from computer-controlled experimental video disks from the 1990's to currently used technology from the Chicago Transit Authority, the second largest public transport system in the United States.

Currently on sabbatical from his position as Associate Professor of Urban Planning and Policy at the University of Illinois, Chicago while he serves as Vice President responsible for Planning and Development at the Chicago Transit Authority, Dr Shiffer spearheads the authority's overall strategic and operations planning efforts, including service scheduling and facilities development.

Since its inception in 1999, the Rothermel Thomas Lecture Series has helped to bridge the gap between the innovative developments taking place in universities and their application by the professions. The lectures are supported by Rothermel Thomas, an urban-design, planning and architectural consultancy.
