Dr Laith Hussein is an Associate Professor Department of Archaeology at the University of Baghdad. He was awarded a Visiting Scholarship to ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº. With Professor Robson, he is editing and publishing over 50 cuneiform tablets containing mathematical exercises, found in the houses of Tell Harmal. This archaeological site in Baghdad Al-Jadida was excavated by the pioneer generation of Iraqi archaeologists and Assyriologists in the 1940s–60s under the great Taha Baqir. Tell Harmal turned out to be ancient Shaduppum, an important outpost of the kingdom of Eshnunna until it was conquered and destroyed by Hammurabi of Babylon in 1762 BC. As the tablets are so well archaeologically contextualised, and from two consecutive strata, they present the first opportunity to construct a fine-grained history of chronological change in the teaching of cuneiform numeracy, as opposed to the broad-sweep generalisations that are currently possible. The resulting volume is scheduled to appear in a dedicated series of books on Tell Harmal, published by the Deutsche Archäologische Institut.Ìý
