Description

This module aims to introduce students to a broad range of research topics and methods as used in Language Sciences. The study of Language Sciences uses a broad range of methods, including acoustic measurements of speech, articulography, ultrasound, sociolinguistic interviews, speech perception and production paradigms, computational methods (machine learning, computational modelling), methods for second language learning, infant and child studies. Each topic will be taught by an expert in that specific subfield of Language Sciences (e.g., Sociolinguistics). Each lecture will introduce 1-2 methods s used in a specific research topic and students will be presented with the opportunity to read and discuss research papers related to that research method in accompanying seminars.

The course will be presented as a series of ten lectures and seminars sessions. The lectures will introduce core topics and research methods, supported by research papers. The seminar sessions will discuss recent research papers using the methods presented in the accompanying lecture. The emphasis is on critical understanding of the topic and research methods.

Indicative Topics

  • Analysis methods for speech production (acoustic analysis, ultrasound, Electroarticulography (EMA)
  • Infant and child studies
  • Eye-tracking paradigms
  • Sociolinguistic interviews
  • Speech perception and production paradigms
  • Computational modelling and machine learning
  • Conversation analysis

Module Aims

  • To provide students with a broad overview of the topics studied in Language Science
