Content: The Hellenistic age spans from the death of Alexander in 323 BCE to 31 BCE. This module offers an introduction to the philosophy of the three major Hellenistic schools: the Epicureans, Stoics and Sceptics. It will touch on issues of ethics, physics and epistemology and will involve engaging with writings of philosophers such as Epicurus, Chrysippus, Cicero, Lucretius and Seneca. Particular attention will be given to the way in which these thinkers developed and debated innovative conceptions of freedom, responsibility, happiness, the emotions and the possibility of knowledge.

Skills: Students will learn to engage with material from different authors, sometimes in the form of fragments. They will develop the ability to interpret and assess philosophical views that were developed during the Hellenistic era.

Preliminary reading: Sellars, John (2018). Hellenistic Philosophy. Oxford University Press.
