Description

This module is a laboratory-based or literature-based research project for the 3rd year students of the BSc in Applied Medical Sciences programme. Students will be provided with a list of titles for projects, run by academics/clinicians within the Faculty of Medical Sciences, to choose from depending on their personal scientific interests. The projects will be carried out under the guidance of a supervisor. Students will have the opportunity to perform original experimental work and have hands-on laboratory experience, or to perform a systematic review or meta-analysis on a particular subject.

Depending on the needs of the project, students will be expected to spend between 2 and 16 hours per week carrying out research. Students will need to apply their organisational in order to manage their research time around the taught modules taught in their Year 3, in coordination with the project supervisor.

At the end of the module, students will be expected to compose a dissertation, which will include details on the Background, Methods, Results and Discussion of their research. Finally, students will have the opportunity to present their work and obtain feedback from experts in the field by giving an oral presentation. The project module can run throughout Term 1 and 2 (1 course unit).
