Description

Outline:

This module covers observational astrophysics and is taught at the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Observatory in Mill Hill, NW London. It is designed to teach contemporary research methods used in optical observational astrophysics, focusing on techniques for the acquisition, reduction and analysis of astronomical data for photometry and spectroscopy. Students gain experience in using computer-controlled (robotic) telescope systems and digital cameras, and software for image and spectroscopic analysis.

Aims:

The aims of this module are to:

  • teach contemporary research methods used in optical observational astrophysics;
  • develop students’ confidence in the use of medium-sized (14—24-inch aperture) telescopes and their associated instruments (CCD cameras);
  • teach the student to use a selection of computer software packages and resources for the planning of observations;
  • acquire a portfolio of astronomical observations (imaging);
  • teach the use of software and techniques for the reduction and analysis of astronomical image and spectroscopic data;
  • develop further the student's understanding of statistical techniques used in the analysis of scientific data and measurements;
  • develop the student’s expertise in the preparation of scientific reports.

Teaching and Learning Methodology:

Observational work is undertaken at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôºâ€™s Observatory (¹û¶³Ó°ÔºO) in Mill Hill, NW London, followed by a series of lectures delivered on the main campus. This provides students with background material on instrumentation and techniques used in modern observational astrophysics.Ìý

Students are trained in the use of the telescopes and computers at ¹û¶³Ó°ÔºO, and they learn how to plan a schedule of observations. This material is consolidated by the completion of compulsory experiments. Each experiment is described in a written script. Experiments are completed under the guidance and supervision of members of staff and student demonstrators.
