Description

Content:

BIOS0005 provides an introduction to molecular biology, cell biology and evolution for Year 1 students on the Human Sciences degrees. It facilitates academic and social bonding amongst the students through regular group presentations and tutorials, and a group project.

Students will develop independent learning, problem solving, writing, and presentational skills.

Indicative lecture list (based on a typical year's syllabus):

Molecular Biology (five lectures covering the following topics):

  • Introduction and biological membranes
  • Cellular and subcellular imaging
  • The molecules of life
  • Nucleic acids and DNA
  • DNA replication
  • Gene expression
  • Protein expression

Cell Biology (five lectures covering the following topics):

  • Cell membranes, protein synthesis, trafficking and exocytosis
  • The cytoskeleton
  • Cell motility
  • Intracellular transport
  • Cell division
  • Cell signalling and Cell death

Evolution

  • Evolution of Multicellularity
