Description

This module will be driven by a combination of current and exemplar research proceedings in high impact journals in the field of Infection & Immunity (I&I). Content will be complementary to that delivered on the INIM0007 Infection and INIM0005 Immunology modules (in first and second term respectively) and be used to challenge the students to think about current concepts in I&I. Students will be guided through a series of papers that are outstanding examples of the academic and methodological state of the art in key areas of I&I and how the hypotheses, approaches and interpretations evident in the papers are essential for formulating current thinking on these topics.

By the end of the module, it is anticipated that students will:

  • Be familiar with the process of primary research and peer review
  • Develop their ability to read and understand primary research papers
  • Begin to critically appraise published papers and be able to critique the data and experimental approaches
  • Be able to begin to pick out and analyse the key experiments that support or refute the initial hypothesis
  • Appreciate that taught knowledge is evolving and changes based on the most current data from the literature
  • Gain confidence discussing scientific literature with their peers and forming their own views
