Description

The module introduces students to sociological perspectives on identities: how individuals and groups think about themselves, others and where they belong in the world. It encourages students to think sociologically about how identities are made through relations and processes, influenced by local and global influences, as well as their inherently political nature. The module uses the lens of identities to introduce students to contemporary sociological theories they will draw on throughout their three-year degree. Employing concepts from sociological work ranging from symbolic interactionalism and post-structuralism to intersectionality, it will exemplify how identities emerge through one of the most fundamental principles of sociology, the complex interactions of structure and agency.Ìý
