Description

This module will introduce the key concepts of global health and develop the skills needed to understand and study the subject. Global health will be considered in the context of humanitarian and disaster-related issues. Key areas of focus of the module include discussing the origins of global health, how global health differs from public health and an introduction to contemporary global health topics and fundamental global health principles. There will be a focus on the One Health approach through assessing global health through the interaction between the human, animal and environment interface and how these are interlinked. This module will take a multidisciplinary and collaborative focus to examine health across sectors, political boundaries and at different political levels and examine how such an approach provides an increased opportunity to promote change and the critical issues faced.

The module will introduce the study of health systems, including governance, structure and financing, and students will learn to compare various national health systems, including from high income and low-income countries in order to understand how these shape healthcare provision. The module will also examine and discuss different global health policy actors, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) in shaping policy globally and for individual countries, and the role of other government and non-government organisations in health policy making. Other topics include the role of evidence in global health and the different levels and types of evidence used in global health and study designs. Within this module, health will be placed in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals and investigating the relationship between health and development, and there will be a specific focus on key global health topics example topics include - Ìýmaternal health, child health, water, sanitation and hygiene, emerging infectious diseases, neglected tropical diseases and disability.
