Description
Beginning in 1895 when the Lumieres first exhibited their new 鈥榗inematographe鈥 in a caf茅 on a Parisian boulevard, the French cinema has astonished through both its originality as will as the artistic innovations deployed to put the 鈥渞eal鈥 world on display. Shortly after this first presentation, the magician and theatrical showman Melies offered another king of spectacle, this one made of illusions and special effects, whose metamorphoses endured long after the 鈥渧oyages to the moon鈥 experienced by the audience. FREN0017 will; explore these two traditions, beginning with the late nineteenth century 鈥榗inema of attractions鈥, with a primary emphasis on the period after 1914. We will especially examine the formative years of French filmmaking when this national cinema served as a path breaker for every avant-garde artistic movement and when the French broke every record for technological advances.
