Description

This module develops your clinical skills from those learned in Year 1. You will learn how to take detailed histories for diagnostic and reassessment hearing clinics, and to perform or assist with additional tests. You will learn how to select, programme, verify, validate, fine tune and troubleshoot hearing aids. You will also learn how to enable shared decision making from a range of aural rehabilitation and management options. You will perform these techniques on other students and volunteers. You will learn how to assist in balance and paediatric clinics. You will undertake a supervised clinical placement of 185 hours during term 2 where you will observe clinical practice and perform clinical testing and rehabilitation.Ìý

This module aims to provide knowledge of and the ability to perform:

  • Effective clinical communication.
  • History taking for diagnostic clinics.
  • Obtaining informed consent for clinical procedures.
  • History taking for rehabilitation clinics.
  • Diagnostic tests of ear function.
  • Explaining test results.
  • Shared decision making.
  • Hearing aid selection, fitting, and troubleshooting.
  • Hearing aid verification and validation.
  • Reflective practice

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:

  1. Take a diagnostic and reassessment history, including medical, audiological and personal details as appropriate.
  2. Obtain informed consent for a variety of clinical procedures.
  3. Select, assist with or perform (as appropriate) and accurately interpret a range of diagnostic hearing tests and investigations of ear function, and explain the results in an accessible way.
  4. Support shared decision making from a range of management options.
  5. Select, fit, programme, verify, validate, fine tune and troubleshoot hearing aids.
  6. Reflect on own performance during a procedure, identify areas of improvement and suggest ways to improve.
