Description

Content:

CELL0007 Cells and Development provides an introduction to significant aspects of cell and developmental biology. Lectures in the first half will cover Cell Biology and Signalling and in the second half Developmental Biology and Stem Cells. There will be practicals on cell permeability and human development.

The module will prepare you for more advanced modules that you may wish to pursue in Year 2, such as CELL0009 Intermediate Cell Biology (Cell Structure and Function), CELL0010 Intermediate Cell Biology (Cell Signalling and Regulation), or BIOL0013 The Biology of Development.

Teaching delivery:

This module is taught in 20 bi-weekly lectures, and students will take one cell permeability practical class.

Indicative lecture topics (based on a typical year's syllabus):

  • Cell biology: Cells and organelles
  • Cell biology: Membranes and cytoskeleton
  • Cell biology: Cell cycle and mitosis
  • Cell biology: Membrane trafficking
  • Cell signalling through ion channels
  • Electrical signalling
  • Signalling through receptors
  • Basic principles of embryonic development (fertilisation, cleavage, gastrulation and morphogenesis, neurulation, organogenesis, metamorphosis)
  • Cell fate and cell differentiation; tissues
  • Stem cells.
