Description
The purpose of this module is to explore the relationship between bioscience and society with a particular emphasis on the key and inter-related areas of funding, public engagement & policy. Ìý Ambitious scientific endeavour requires public confidence and financial support. This course will draw on a range of case studies and contemporary examples to enable students to understand the need for biomedical scientists to engage with the wider world, the different ways in which scientists fund their work and how government policies can have major effects on scientific progress. Examples of the case studies include the work of organisations such the Francis Crick Institute, The Wellcome Trust, The Royal Institution and the Natural History Museum. There will also be an in-depth focus on topics such as understanding different types of grant funding; evaluating the impact and quality of science; the challenges and opportunities for public engagement; how scientists can influence and advise government policies, and an overview of emerging trends in all of these areas. This module has been designed to develop students’ abilities for deep thinking, critical analysis and debate. A range of teaching styles will be used to deliver the module including in-person lectures, online learning material and visits to relevant institutions in central London.Ìý
