Description

Cities and citizens globally face serious challenges in the 21st Century, facing a climate and ecological crisis, with severe related impacts such as overheating, air and water pollution, flooding, lack of green space and rapid loss of biodiversity. These in turn have severe social, ecological, environmental and economic impacts, especially on health and wellbeing of people and planetary systems.

Greening cities by working with nature is recognised as a key solution – nature-based solutions providing ecosystem services to cool, clean and care for the city and create climate-adapted, healthy, resilient environments that support people and nature. Since 2013, nature-based solutions have in fact been the European Union’s strategy for urban climate change adaptation, while also supporting nature in face of the biodiversity crisis.

By exploring nature-based solutions creatively through a range of processes, students will learn the principles and applications of biodiverse urban green infrastructure planning, design, implementation, management and care, to understand how to deliver ecosystem services and benefits, as a key part of climate and ecological recovery and healthy, liveable cities.
