Professor Ivan Parkin, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematical and听Physical Sciences, commented: 鈥淲e are delighted to see such a large number of teams and staff from our Faculty being awarded and recognised for their dedication to improving sustainability here at 果冻影院. We wish to extend our thanks to all of them for their hard work.

"It鈥檚 been especially excellent to see so many teams taking part in LEAF from the Department of Chemistry. Their participation has been exemplary, and we hope to replicate their success this year with our other departments in the future.鈥

Spotlight on Chemistry

This year, we saw a huge increase in the number of laboratories within the Department of Chemistry taking part in LEAF, with a whopping 15 teams getting an award. We chatted with Kris Page, the Inorganic and Materials Chemistry Laboratory Manager and Departmental LEAF champion, to find out how he thinks his department achieved this and what other departments can do to be as successful.听

How did you find engaging with the LEAF programme?

鈥淔or me, I once again enjoyed speaking with other lab users and engaging with the LEAF team at our audit to share best practices and ideas. It really makes you take a step back from things in the lab and question if things are being done in the best way possible.鈥

How did Chemistry get such good engagement?听

鈥淪ustainability has become a core part of our departmental ethos and is now addressed alongside safety as two things of equal importance that go hand in hand. As Professor Andrea Sella, one of our most enthusiastic sustainability champions, says, safety and sustainability are really just the same thing, working at different timescales.

"Our head of department, management team, and academics are all keen to push forward in sustainability. Having a dedicated LEAF champion work to maintain and improve engagement in the programme throughout the department also helps. In particular, we want to see how we can address dry labs and computational facilities within LEAF.鈥

What lessons did you learn this year?听

鈥淪peak with the other teams in your department. You will find a wealth of ideas and knowledge 鈥 problems you have solved might help them, and vice-versa.鈥

What would you recommend to other departments to replicate this type of success?听

鈥淵ou need to get the senior management onboard and have someone passionate about helping others start their LEAF journey. Generally speaking, students and postdocs are warmly receptive to the initiatives behind LEAF when they have someone to encourage them from within the department.鈥

If you鈥檙e feeling inspired and would like your department, office or laboratory to take part in either Green Impact or LEAF in the next academic year, please reach out to our Faculty Lead Green Champion, Cami Warren. 听
