Biography

Physician and slave-owner in Jamaica. Died c. 1746-1748.

  1. Elizabeth, first wife of Dr James Callendar, remarried in 1751 to Sir Archibald Grant, 2nd of Monymusk. She was his third wife: "with whom he is said to have had 拢30,000". James and Elizabeth's daughter married Sir Archibald Grant's eldest son, Sir Archibald Grant, 3rd of Monymusk, in 1755. Elizabeth died in 1759 and Mary died in 1787.

  2. James Calender of Kingston, doctor. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1748. Slave-ownership at probate: 24 of whom 12 were listed as male and 12 as female. 0 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: 拢11865.67 Jamaican currency of which 拢1111 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included 拢55.92 currency cash, 拢8774.97 currency debts and 拢20 currency plate.
