Biography

  1. Mary Augier, born into slavery and manumitted under the will of her late father John Augier (d. 1722, a white planter). Sister of Susannah, Jane and Elizabeth Augier (all q.v.). A Private Act of Assembly in 1747 gave 'the same rights and privileges with English Subjects, born of white parents' to Mary's children William, Elizabeth, Jane and Eleanor (whose father was William Tyndall, a Kingston merchant). Her daughter Elizabeth had nine children with John Morse (q.v.).

  2. Mary Augier of Kingston, spinster. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1764. Slave-ownership at probate: 14 of whom 7 were listed as male and 7 as female. 4 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: 拢3294.93 Jamaican currency of which 拢850 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included 拢0 currency cash, 拢2477.96 currency debts and 拢74.25 currency plate.
