Attorney and then apparently owner of Aeolus Valley in St David: representatives of his legatees claimed the compensation for the enslaved people on the estate in the 1830s, although he appears to have died in the early 1780s. This was possibly the same man as the John Paterson acting as agent for Houstoun & Co. in the south-east of Jamaica (St Thomas-in-the-East and St David) in the late 1770s.
John Paterson of St David, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1783. Slave-ownership at probate: 166 of whom 88 were listed as male and 78 as female. 0 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: 拢11498.91 Jamaican currency of which 拢6905 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included 拢134.91 currency cash, 拢1204 currency debts and 拢20 currency plate.
