John Purcell

???? - 1795

Biography

  1. Will of John Purcell of [Duke Street in the parish of] St Marylebone proved 01/12/1795. In the will [originally made in 1779] and a series of codicils he expressed anger at his 'wicked wife', and left his share in the Norton estate on Tortola 'to which... I succeeded since the death of my father as joint heir to Mrs Downing one of the Norton family' to his friend and executor John Macnamara [q.v]. In a codicil of 1785 when he was of Portman Square he left monetary legacies to the Macnamara family and an annuity of 拢100 p.a. to John Norton son of his sister Margaret Purcell. He revoked these in a codicil of 1793 made at Lausanne, railing against his wife who was living in 'open adultery.' In a final codicil he left 拢2000 to which he was entitled on the death of his wife to Macnamara, who was identified as of Baker Street in the grant of probate.
