Early slave-owner in Demerara, owner of the Garden of Eden and Ketty or Kitty estates (which he at least contemplated offering for sale in 1799 for 拢41,750 and 拢70,000 respectively) and operating transatlantically between c. 1798 and his death at Elgin in 1813. He owned Innes House, Elgin and the estate of Leuchars in the period around 1798-1801.
