Thomas Boddington of Clapton

Biography

London West india merchant, retiring from the Boddingtons family firm in 1794. Brother of Benjamin (1730-1791), and uncle of Samuel (1766-1843) (q.v.) and Thomas (1774-1862) (q.v.).

  1. Elizabeth, the daughter of Thomas Boddington of Clapton, married Isaac Hawkins Browne, in the ODNB as 'politician and industrialist' 13/12/1805 as his second wife. The entry describes Thomas Boddington of Clapton as a West India merchant.

  2. Thomas Boddington of Clapton left 拢120,000 at his death. His grandsons the Rev. Thomas Fremeaux Boddington and Reginald Brooke Boddington left 拢50,000 (resworn from 拢60,000) and 拢16,000 on their deaths in 1863 and 1871 respectively. Thomas Boddington of Clapton's son Benjamin Boddington (1776-1855) had been a partner with his (Benjamin's) cousin Samuel Boddington (q.v.) before eloping with his wife.

The mortgage grew and passed through the successive iterations of the Boddington firm until 1799.
