Son of John Stirling of Kippendavie, and partner in Stirling, Gordon & Co. (q.v.).

1. Married first Elizabeth [sic]  Barrett Barrett (daughter of Henry Barrett 1762-1794), by whom he had two surviving sons who became merchants in Glasgow, William junior (who became in turn a partner in Stirling Gordon), and John. Died 1862. Cousin of Archibald Stirling of Keir & Cadder (q.v.).

2. Anthony Cooke shows him leaving an estate worth £20,427, including: insurance of £6,076 (with Scottish Widows and Scottish Amicable), balance with Stirling Gordon £8,689, sum due by John Stirling £4000, shares in St Mungo's Episcopal Church £21. Settled property in West Indies on his second son William. £2000 left to his widow.
