Sexuality and the Law examines numerous ways in which the law regulates and responds to issues connected with an individual’s sexuality, including sexual orientation and gender identity. Our aim is to give students a thorough grounding in the theory and practical application of the law in relation to sexuality, drawing on a number of disciplines and areas of law to illustrate the ways in which the law regulates and interacts with individuals and groups based on sexuality.

As the module will be research-led by the teaching team, the exact topics that we cover from year to year will vary depending on the availability of those people teaching on the module. By way of example, relevant current topics of interest of Laws’ colleagues include Private Law and LGBTQ+ Rights, Planning Law and Sexuality, Queer Professionalism, Equal Marriage and Equal Rights, Sexual Citizenship, and Religious Freedom and LGBT+ Rights.

By the end of this module, students will have a clear understanding of the theoretical tools that can be used to analyse legal problems from the perspective of sexuality, knowledge of various ways that the law can and does regulate and interact with individuals and groups based on their sexuality, an understanding of how the law in relation to sexuality fits into broader legal problems and perspectives, such as discrimination law, and an ability to consider areas for legal reform to respond to challenges arising from the perspective of sexuality.
