Throughout his聽Essais, Michel de聽Montaigne continuously charts a belabored negotiation of the natural world and its relationship to the human body. Following his insistence upon the entanglement of changeable landscape and inconstant body, Montaigne鈥檚 use of ecosemiotic metaphors, portrayal of natural movements, citation of shifting foundations and horizons, and aesthetic and qualitative assessments of the environment underscore the dramatic effect that landscapes have upon the viewing self--a viewing self who strives to seek firm ground in a world perennially聽鈥渆n movement.鈥澛
