Clinical academic appraisals and revalidation

Guidance on the appraisal and revalidation process and for clinical academics staff at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº.

Appraisals

In line with the principles of the Follett Review Report, the appraisal of clinical academics should be done jointly by the substantive (university) and honorary (NHS) employer. There are five academic components that should be included in all joint appraisals:ÌýTeaching and Training,Ìý¸é±ð²õ±ð²¹°ù³¦³ó,Ìý³¢±ð²¹»å±ð°ù²õ³ó¾±±è,ÌýEnterprise andÌýEnabling.

Clinical Academic Staff who hold their honorary clinical contract with ¹û¶³Ó°ÔºH should complete their annual appraisals on SARD.ÌýÌýClinical Academic Staff who hold their honorary clinical contract with other NHS Partners should complete their appraisal on the NHS Trust’s electronic system and include a section on the academic component

The Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) has published appraisal guidance for clinical academics (¹û¶³Ó°Ôº will be developing its own guidance based on this):

We would also advise that:

  • NHS component of the appraisal should be carried out by the organisation with which the honorary clinical contract is held.

  • the outcome of appraisal will be shared with the Responsible Officer (RO) to enable the RO to make a revalidation recommendation

The General Medical Council has published a prescribed connection tool to help clinical academics identify their designated body, this tool can be found on the

Revalidation

Revalidation is the General Medical Councils new way of regulating licensed doctors. Licensed doctors including doctors in foundation year two and specialty training will have to revalidate, usually every five years. In addition, for doctors in postgraduate training, they will also revalidate when they receive their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).

Revalidation for ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº staff holding an honorary clinical appointment will be coordinated by the Deanery at which the individual is registered.
