¹û¶³Ó°Ôº IHE welcomes back students from AIIMS and IIT-Delhi, India for CMIC summer school

15 June 2020

16 students will be virtually hosted through CMIC’s medical imaging summer school in July, with the support of ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Global Engagement Office

We are delighted to announce that we will be continuing our collaboration with the  (AIIMS), New Delhi and the , Delhi by hosting 16 students through a virtual summer school in medical imaging.

The Summer School is an annual course hosted by ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Centre for Medical Image Computing (CMIC) which will be held virtually this year between 6-10 July. Last year, 5 students from AIIMS visited ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº to take part. The school allowed these young scientists to engage with experts at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº in a diverse range of image computing topics, fostering new links of collaboration, critical thinking and scientific discovery. Their visit also coincided with ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Institute of Healthcare Engineering’s .

Two of last year’s students, Amol Sood and Ashank Khaitan (pictured) said, "As clinicians, we are not frequently exposed to the engineering process that goes behind developing the technology that we often use in the clinics. So it was an enriching experience to listen to the talks by pioneers in the field of medical image computing, and to interact with such an array of engineers and physicists".

Medical image computing is a core theme of healthcare engineering at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº with internationally recognised activities crossing multiple centres, institutes and departments. Our long-standing focus on medical imaging and devices, data science, artificial intelligence and robotics was recognized with a recent EPSRC-award for a Centre for Doctoral Training in Intelligent, Integrated Imaging In Healthcare. Through the CDT and with allied academic staff, projects at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº cover a wide variety of imaging modalities, devices, theories and applications.

With this sixth MedICSS event we aim to allow young scientists from the international community to engage with both ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº and invited experts in a diverse range of image computing topics. As part of the course delegates will learn about the newest developments in the medical imaging field. As well as lectures by scientific leaders we will promote activity-based learning through interactive breakout sessions which will encourage collaboration, critical thinking and scientific discovery.

The five-day course covers different topics including: Acquisition/Reconstruction, Image guided interventions, Image processing and analysis, Modelling, and Machine learning. It will culminate with a hands-on mini project.

The students taking part in the Summer School from AIIMS are Vanshika Arora, Anjali Singhal, Anshul Gupta, Aditi Rao, Vishwas Kumar Anand, Mehak Singhal, Tamoghna Ghosh, Mehak Arora, Parul Berry, Archisman Mazumder and Manraj Singh Sra. The students from IIT-D are Dharmesh Singh, Archana Malagi, Vivek Kamalkant Parmar, Puneet Dheer and Kritika Lohia.

We would like to thank the generous support of ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Global Engagement Office in part-funding the students and supporting our wider collaboration with India, and thanks ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº CMIC for hosting the students virtually.
